Abstract

This teaching case examines UltraNutri India Pvt. Ltd., a biotechnology startup applying Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) to address disease, antibiotic dependence, fishmeal scarcity, and waste-management challenges in Indian shrimp aquaculture. The company converts sugarcane bagasse and coffee husk into larval feedstock, induces biotic stress to enhance antimicrobial peptide expression, and formulates AMP-enriched functional feed for Litopenaeus vannamei. Field trials in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh reported improved survival, lower feed conversion ratios, higher harvest weights, tenfold reductions in Vibrio load, zero antibiotic use, and farmer profit increases ranging from 20% to 90%. The case also explores UltraNutri’s second-generation platform using transgenic BSF larvae as potential expression systems for veterinary vaccines and therapeutic proteins. It ultimately presents a strategic dilemma: whether to prioritise rapid scale-up of the validated aquaculture feed business or invest in the more transformative but capital-intensive biopharma platform. The case supports discussion on sustainability, circular economy, biotechnology commercialisation, and deep-tech venture strategy.
