Abstract

Shear walls are among the most effective structural components used in reinforced concrete (RCC) buildings to resist lateral loads caused by wind and seismic forces. Their proper placement significantly improves the stiffness, stability, and overall structural performance of high-rise buildings. This study investigates the effect of different shear wall locations on the behaviour of a G+30 multistorey commercial building using ETABS software. Four structural models were developed and analysed: a conventional frame structure without shear walls, a model with shear walls at the corners, a model with shear walls at the centre, and a model with shear walls at both the centre and corners. Linear static analysis was performed to evaluate key response parameters such as storey displacement and storey drift. The results indicate that the inclusion of shear walls considerably reduces lateral displacement and inter-storey drift compared to the conventional frame system. Among the analysed configurations, the model with shear walls placed at both the centre and corners exhibited the best structural performance, providing maximum stiffness and enhanced resistance against lateral loads. The study concludes that optimal shear wall placement is essential for improving the safety, serviceability, and seismic performance of high-rise commercial buildings.
