Stone columns are widely used as a ground improvement technique to enhance the load-carrying capacity and reduce settlement of soft soils. However, conventional stone columns may suffer from bulging failure under high vertical loads, especially in very soft clay deposits. To overcome this limitation, reinforcing stone columns with geogrids has emerged as an effective and economical solution. In this study, the performance of stone columns reinforced with geogrid is investigated to evaluate improvements in strength, stiffness, and load-settlement behaviour. Geogrid reinforcement provides lateral confinement to the stone column, thereby reducing bulging and increasing its bearing capacity. The reinforced stone columns demonstrate improved stress distribution and enhanced interaction between the column and surrounding soil. Results indicate that geogrid-reinforced stone columns significantly increase load-carrying capacity and reduce settlement when compared to conventional stone columns. The study highlights that geogrid reinforcement is a promising technique for improving the efficiency and durability of stone columns in soft ground conditions, making it suitable for foundations of embankments, buildings, and other civil engineering structures.
